Fowlers Toads (Bufo fowleri) commonly seek out river and lakeshores to mate during early to mid-summer, but will also visit seasonal waters such as storm ponds and vernal pools. The toad pictured here was discovered this Spring near an Appomattox County swimming pool. The missing, front right leg is a birth defect. Such malformations can occur naturally and have received considerable press attention in recent years. The abrasion on the chest resulted from this toad having to half-hop, half-drag itself in getting about, and eventually led to its demise.
